Geek Giveaways

I work in marketing. My favorite niche is technology. I used to work for a promotional products company. If anyone needs giveaways for geeks, I should be the person to ask. I’m going to another press event some time next week and I’m sure I’ll be getting a bunch of useless tchotchky (a fancy name for promo products, dear). The usual fare involves pens, sticky notes (Post-it for those who prefer the branded type), notepads, notebooks, t-shirts. Come on marketing geniuses! Let your imagination work for you a bit. If you invite people to cover your technology-related event, please, for the love of God, send them home with something to remember you by.

Here are a few suggestions:

Retractable Cable Retractable Ethernet Cable - Who uses cables in the age of WiFi? I do. Especially when the signal is weak or when I just feel like it. It’s still something that I could bring everywhere and I could use anytime.
Wristband Flashdrive Flash Drive - They’re not that expensive and they come in a variety of styles. The flashdrive wristband is one I wouldn’t mind having….especially if it’s in pink.
Transluscent Mousepad Mousepad - It’s real simple. I don’t like going shopping for a mousepad. I use it everyday, but it doesn’t have to be something fancy. If you have your brand on it, I would still use it. Maybe I’ll even remember to buy something from you with the constant reminder that I get.
Chrome-plated Mouse A nice mouse - Now don’t just go picking the first mouse you see. Remember, I work in technology and a mouse is important to me. Chances are, I could afford a really good brand. But if it’s something different, I’ll definitely use it. Guess what I’m using? A Disney Princess mouse! hehe. But I’d trade it in for this fancy chrome-plated ladybug.
Sumo Stressball Stressball - Yeah, I won’t use it for work. But hey, thanks for remembering that I have a stressful job. Get me something cute and I’ll make sure I tell everyone about your company.

There are a million other things you could get a techie if you had the right budget. A real estate company in the Philippines once gave away iPod Nanos while letting media people ride in the latest BMWs to get to the property they were launching (my dad was one of the lucky recipients). If you’re still having a hard time thinking of gifts for the technology industry, just put yourself in the techie’s shoes and you’ll be able to figure it out.
