Evangelized at the MRT

I find it odd that it’s totally acceptable in the Philippines for people in buses to try and evangelize others. It is a predominantly Catholic country after all. So it happened this morning that the scene so familiar with bus riders was strangely taking place in the MRT.

This really old woman – salt and pepper hair and all – slowly entered the first cart where all the women are. She was hunched over and her skin wrinkled like a raisin. Several ladies got up to offer their seats to her. Though barely able to stand, she fervently refused. Minutes later she started addressing everyone in a clear and loud voice: “Sisters, you are all sinners….”

And so that’s how my morning went.

10:20 am. Quezon Avenue Station. Turns out I am a sinner.
10:22 am GMA-Kamuning Station. I need to repent. Okay. I’m listening.
10: 26 am Araneta – Cubao Station. She says homosexuality is a sin…hmmm…I don’t quite agree. I think it’s more of a lifestyle choice than a sin.
10:33 am.  Santolan Station. Adultery is also a sin. I’m not guilty of that, so that’s cool.
10: 37: am Ortigas Station. Owing people money and not paying them back is a sin…that I kinda agree with. A lot of people owe me money and they don’t really pay me back – them sinners! But here’s the thing…I owe 3 credit card companies a lot of money and I don’t pay them back either…damn.
10: 40 am Shaw Boulevard Station. We’re all going to burn in hell….no comment.
10: 43 am Boni Avenue Station. She tells us about her church in Guadalupe, service times and how important it is to attend mass daily before 9pm. Don’t ask me why 9pm, I guess that’s when the door closes or something.
10: 47 am Guadalupe Station. She finally gets off.
10: 50 am Buendia Station. As the train approached Buendia. There was dead silence.

While I don’t agree with a lot of the things she said, I appreciate her passion. It takes a lot of guts to stand in a public place like that and declare your love for your religion. And seeing as how she was really really old, that took a lot of effort as well. You gotta remember that the MRT is not really the most conducive place for evangelizing people. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I have this nagging feeling that I need to go to church today.

Here’s the weird part, I’m not even Catholic.
