You know that void before this sentence, that’s how my writing feels these days. Yes, I love pink. I love technology. I love cute stuff. I just miss the thrill of writing real news. When I first got into professional writing I was always assigned to do features. They’re easy and fun. Safe.
When Philippine News realized that I could do so much better, they started assigning me real stories. Banner stories even. I remember my first real assignment that got on the front page was about the church and its stand on molestation. For the first time in history, the Catholic church (or at least the diocese of LA) was willing to admit to the cases cropping up here and there and how they’ll begin to take action against it.
It was big news. CNN and NBC. Fox News Network. All the big guys were there. It was a total media frenzy and I had to be really aggressive to get a single shot. I was climbing ladders and pushing the crowd. I even went past the press line and was told by the police to stand back. No biggie. Got the shot that made a headline and wrote the story that came with it. It was intense.
The next big rollout was the Abercrombie racism case. It was a bit close to home…literally. The class action was filed by a group of Filipinos and Latin Americans against A&F for hiring based on race (as proven by their White Book….or Look Book..whatever) which was some sort of branding book that they have to follow to cater to their market. In it, all images portrayed were of caucasians. What made the lawsuit a winner (at least in the eyes of the media) was their case against the A&F branch in Glendale (the city where I lived in). I was the first one to break that story. Within days it spread like wild fire. All the mainstream publications and the new media were hounding A&F.
That was four years ago. I haven’t written anything like that since then. I guess writing for a living kills the creativity. It kills the passion. Last year, I became known as the writing machine of Zimplizity. I could churn out copy like crazy. Give me a hotel assignment and I’ll give you the copy for an entire site in an hour. Even in Branders I was known for that. They gave me an assignment for 10 SEO pages for a week, my turnaround time was one day. I think it dried up my brain.
Now I have nothing. Empty.
